One theologian has said that “the church exists for mission as fire exists for burning.” Well, yes and no. To be sure, the church ought to exist for mission. “Nowhere in the Bible is the world exhorted to ‘come to church,’ ” says Richard Halverson. “But the church’s mandate is clear. She must go to the world.” Yet statistics indicate we don’t. Church sociologist Win Arn says that at least 75 percent of the congregations in America are plateaued or experiencing a decline in membership.
